The spirit is the part of each person that produces positive feelings and energy. It comes from within but is fed from sources outside ourselves. Too often, living with the problem of addiction removes everyone further and further from their source of spirituality, whatever those sources may be.
Each of us has a unique spirit. We each have little things that make us feel happy inside: maybe it's taking a walk through a flower garden, listening to certain music, attending a support group meeting, creating art work, engaging in a good conversation, playing with the children, hang-gliding, meditating, attending church, traveling or reading. Whatever makes you feel calm and happy and whole can be a source of your spirituality.
Spirituality is the power greater than ourselves that will restore our sanity. Our spirituality is our safety net. Opening up to positive energy from things outside ourselves provides us with the answers we can't find on our own. It gives us the strength and humility to accept that we don't have all the answers.
Spiritual growth requires nourishing the very centre of our being - the part that gives us strength and allows us to proceed without fear. The spirit is the part that makes us want to live; when the spirit dies we no longer want to be alive. No one can determine what form spirituality should take for someone else, but each of us is capable of figuring it out for ourselves.
